Serie A Round 26: Super Mario rescues Inter

    Atalanta 0-2 Chievo
    Cagliari 0-0 Torino
    Inter 3-3 Roma
    Lazio 1-0 Bologna
    Juventus 1-0 Napoli
    Palermo 0-4 Catania
    Reggina 1-1 Fiorentina
    Sampdoria 2-1 AC Milan
    Siena 0-0 Genoa
    Udinese 2-0 Lecce

Internazionale showed their title-winning character coming from 2-0 and 3-1 behind at home to Roma to secure a 3-3 draw. Despite Totti and Ibrahimovic missing, both sides served up a thrilling encounter. Daniele De Rossi gave the Giallorossi the lead with a header before John Arne Riise beat Julio Cesar with a low shot for 2-0. Mourinho acted quickly bringing Figo and Viera on at half-time, and Inter seemed to spark into life. Starlet striker Mario Balotelli, a fringe player before Christmas but now increasingly influential, converted a penalty to pull a goal back before Julio Baptista set up Matteo Brighi to re-establish the visitors’ two goal lead. Inter were not done, however, and Balotelli thumped home his second of the game, before substitute Hernan Crespo rose highest for a trademark header to rescue a point for the leaders in this breathless game.

That result means the gap with Juventus is now 7 points after the Gobbini defeated Napoli on Saturday evening. It was an unconvincing performance from Rainieri’s men but one Claudio Marchisio goal just before half time was enough to settle it against the Partenopei, who have now collected two points from their last 8 matches.

AC Milan’s defeat at Sampdoria has left them further behind in the title race and with Carlo Ancelloti’s position looking increasingly precarious. The 61-year-old is leaving at the end of the season anyway, but with this defeat Galliani and co may think about cutting short his stint. The dynamic duo of Pazzini and Cassano once again did the business for the Blucerchirati, with only an Alexandre Pato goal to show for Milan’s efforts.

Fiorentina missed out on the chance to draw level with the Rossoneri in third after they were held 1-1 at bottom club Reggina. Alessio Sestu’s beautiful strike gave the hosts the lead only for former Reggina man Emiliano Bonnazzoli to level things just two minutes later. Genoa also missed out on the chance to leapfrog the Viola, managing only a disappointing goalless draw at Siena.

The Sicilian derby proved fruitful for one team on the island as Catania thumped home side Palermo 4-0. Japanese striker Takayuki Morimoto was in inspired form for the visitors, scoring one and creating another while Giuseppe Mascara scored possibly the goal of the week – a remarkable hoof from the halfway line. That result severely dents both Palermo’s pride and their UEFA Cup ambitions.

Lecce dropped to second-bottom following their fourth consecutive defeat, this time away at Udinese who won 2-0 thanks to goals from Gaetano D’Agostino and Giovanni Pasquale. Chievo moved up to within just goal difference of safety after an unexpected away win at Atalanta, who have previously been very good at home. Langella and Pellisier with late strikes for a precious win for the flying donkeys. Cagliari and Torino drew 0-0, while two Mauro Zarate goals either side of half time were enough to condemn Bologna at Lazio.
