Real Madrid have moved swiftly following the end of their highly disappointing campaign to appoint Manuel Pellegrini as their new head coach, on a three year contract. The former Villarreal man may soon have Kaka to count on as one of his players, but it will be interesting to see if a manager who gave the temperamental Juan Riquelme the boot at Villarreal can cope with an influx of 'Galacticos' under new president Florentino Perez. There's no doubting Pellegrini's class, after an excellent four-year spell in Castellon and before that successful stints in Argentina with River Plate and San Lorenzo. However, he is the sort of manager who needs to be given time, and that is something Real Madrid presidents seem notoriously reluctant to offer their coaches.
Villarreal have quickly appointed Ernesto Valverde, the former Espanyol coach, as the Chilean's replacement. Valverde arrives back in Spain following a year in Greece with Olympiakos, where despite guiding them to a league and cup double, he was released following alleged disagreements between himself and the board of directors. In 2007-8, Valverde guided Espanyol to 12th despite an impressive first half of the campaign. He also took them to the 2006-7 UEFA Cup final.
Elsewhere Osasuna have rewarded Jose Antonio Camacho for keeping the team in La Liga with a new 1-year contract.
