La Liga Round 35 Review: Champagne on ice for Barca

    Sevilla 3 - 1 Mallorca
    Athletic Bilbao 1 - 0 Real Betis
    Valencia 3 - 0 Real Madrid
    Getafe 3 - 0 Osasuna
Recreativo Huelva 1 - 2 Deportivo La Coruña
    Real Valladolid 0 - 0 Numancia
    Málaga 1 - 0 Racing Santander
    Almería 3 - 1 Sporting Gijón
    Barcelona 3 - 3 Villarreal
    Atlético Madrid 3 - 2 Espanyol

Another frantic, breathless weekend in La Liga concluded with Atletico Madrid recovering from a characteristically awful start to come from 2 goals down to beat Espanyol at the Calderon. Diego Forlan's rocket of a first goal gave them hope before Aguero drew then level, Forlan then grabbing the winner and drawing level on goals with Samuel Eto'o to set up a truly awesome finale of a duel for the Pichichi crown. Earlier that night, Barcelona had surrendered a 3-1 advantage to allow Villarreal to claw back a point through goals from Llorente (2) and Fernandez after Eto'o, Alves and Keita had scored for the hosts. It was a result that meant Barcelona cannot yet celebrate wrapping up the La Liga title.

Real Madrid all-but-folded on Saturday evening with a dismal display at Valencia. Mata, Silva and Baraja all got on the scoresheet for Los Che as they remain the men in position of that vital fourth place. Sevilla retain third spot after a 3-1 win over Mallorca that included Fredi Kanoute's 18th of another prolific campaign. Regardless of Saturday's result, we must tip our hats to Gregorio Manzano for rescuing Mallorca from the abyss. Bottom in January, they looked hopeless and helpless but now they sit 10th, safe from relegation, an all the more impressive achievement when you factor in the players he has lost and the parlous financial state of the club.

Despite taking a point from the Camp Nou, Villarreal were shunted out of the top six by a resurgent Deportivo La Coruna, who collected their fourth win in five at Recreativo thanks to goals from Verdu and Alvarez. Malaga's defeat of Racing (Racing's fourth loss in five - awful) means they are still in with a shout of the Europea league, while Athletic beat Betis for a third win in four. Betis have lost their last four games and are now perilously close to the two teams below them who are the only ones to have worse records then they do - Osasuna (who lost 3-0 at Getafe) and Sporting Gijon (who lost 3-1 at Almeria, including Negredo's 19th of the season).
