Wolfsburg back in charge: Bundesliga reviews

    Bochum 0-2 Hannover
    Bayern 2-1 Monchengladbach
    Schalke 1-2 Leverkusen
    Arminia 2-2 Stuttgart
    Wolfsburg 4-0 Hoffenheim
    Karlsruhe 0-0 Energie
    Eintracht 0-2 Dortmund
    Cologne 1-0 Bremen
    Hamburg 1-1 Hertha

After a bit of a wobble last week against Energie, Wolfsburg dismissed any worries about their title credentials with a clinical display over sorry Hoffenheim. Having been out of the goals recently, Edin Dzeko fired in a 12-minute hat-trick after a goalless first half. Grafite added a penalty late on, given away by Andreas Beck who was sent off for his troubles. Having led the way up to christmas, Hoffenheim still haven't won in 2009 and now are out of the European running. Bayern remain three points further back after another unconvincing display, this time against Gladbach who were beaten 2-1. Bastian Schweinsteiger put the Bavarians ahead, but Filip Daems' penalty levelled it four minutes later. Try as they might, Gladbach couldn't fashion another clear cut opportunity and paid for it with Hamit Altintop's winner. The other challengers all drew. Stuttgart led twice against Arminia, first through Martin Delpierre and again through Tomas Hitzlsperger after Christopher Katongo equalised. Vlad Munteanu made it two each from the penalty spot. Hamburg and Hertha went up against each other and came out level. Martin Jol's side led early on through Marcel Janssen but Gojko Kacar grabbed a second half equaliser to leave both sides adrift of the leaders.

It remains tight at the bottom where Karlsruhe still occupy 18th place after a goalless draw with Energie who are a point clear of the drop zone. Gladbach sit one point and one place above Karlsuhe and Arminia are to clear of them in sixteenth. Bochum still aren't out of it after their 2-0 defeat at home to Hannover thanks to Arnold Bruggink and Hanno Baltisch. Hannover are safe.

Bremen's best chance of European football next season is to win the UEFA Cup after defeat to Cologne on Sunday, although they trail Hamburg in the all-German semi-final. Milivoje Novakovic slid in for the winner midway through the second half. Two late goals for Dortmund against Frankfurt from Mohamed Zidan and a Habib Bellaid own goal kept up their push for Europe while Leverkusen upset Schalke rhythm with a 2-1 win. Patrick Helmes and Renato Augusto gave Leverkusen an early lead and a goal three minutes from time by Kevin Kuranyi was all Schalke could muster in response.
